The first leg of the battle between Bayern Munich and Arsenal ended in a 2-2 stalemate. There were quite a few chances for both sides, but it probably is Bayern who could feel that they should have won it. Now, at home, they will have a chance to correct that and eliminate Arsenal from the Champions League, but The Gunners are not to be underestimated.
Bayern Munich Team News
Domestic failure for Bayern meant that Bayer Leverkusen won their first-ever Bundesliga title. The Bavarians have only the Champions League left to play for. Their chances to eliminate Arsenal are quite good, as the first leg result of 2-2 and home advantage in the second game tilt the odds to their favour. However, recently Bayern did lose a pivotal home game, against another Champions League contestant and major rival no less – Borussia Dortmund. Despite the game being a domestic one, Thomas Tuchel’s side has not been all that convincing in Europe as well, with all of their group stage wins at home being a close affair. Their round of 16 win over Lazio showed that The Bavarians have it in them to dominate the opposition at home. Interestingly enough, all of Bayern’s home wins in the tournament this season have featured over 2.5 goals.
Arsenal Team News
The Gunners suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Aston Villa and squandered the chance they had with Liverpool’s loss. With both them and The Reds losing their games Manchester City took the initiative in the Premier League. Arsenal’s visit to Germany certainly looks like it happened at the worst possible time for Mikel Arteta’s team – after a domestic loss that saw his team give the initiative to their competitors. Moreover, Arsenal were not all that convincing during their first-leg battle with Bayern, as the Germans could have easily scored more, had it not been for luck and squandered chances. In the Champions League, The Gunners are also not at all convincing on away trips, with the team suffering 2 losses, 1 draw and 1 win from their 4 away fixtures in the tournament. Their most recent loss to Porto was the only game out of the 4 in which Arsenal did not score a goal.
Head-to-Head-Games
If there is a common trend in games between Bayern Munich and Arsenal it is the number of goals scored – all of their last 5 games featured not only over 2.5 goals but scoring from both teams. The last 2 times that Arsenal played at the Allianz Arena were nights to be forgotten as in both cases they lost 5-1.
Bayern Munich – Arsenal Betting Prediction
Bayern Munich will certainly have an edge here due to the home advantage and good result from the first leg. Despite being shaky and inconsistent, the team does manage to score a fair amount of goals – at least 2 per game in their last 3 competitive fixtures. In the Champions League, the only time Bayern did not score a goal in a home game was during their group-stage bout with Copenhagen. In all other home games from the tournament, the Bavarians were wearing their scoring shoes. Arsenal have also been a convenient opponent for Bayern from a historical point of view. That is why I expect to see goals from the Germans here and my pick would be for Bayern Munich to score over 1.5 goals here.
