Group E has a clear favourite in Belgium to win it, but the second and third spots are open to interpretation by anybody. Romania and Ukraine will both be hoping to progress through to the next stage and will be looking to gather as many points as possible to make that dream a reality.
Romania Team News
Romania had a fantastic qualification campaign that saw them topple their group and finish above the likes of Switzerland. Recent games, however, signal that Edward Iordănescu’s men are not in peak form. Their last win came during the qualifying stage against Switzerland, but ever since this fixture Romania have not tasted victory. Before the start of the European Championship, Romania played 2 friendlies which further solidified this claim as they reached two 0-0 draws against Bulgaria and Luxembourg, both of which are teams that failed to qualify.
Ukraine Team News
Ukraine’s qualification road saw them win playoff games against tough opposition like Bosnia & Herzegovina and Iceland. In terms of form, it could be said that Serhiy Rebrov’s men are in an upward spiral as they have just 1 loss in their last 5 fixtures against Poland and even managed to reach a 0-0 draw with Germany. In their final warm-up game against Moldova, Ukraine registered their biggest-ever victory after a 4-0 win. With that in mind, alongside good recent form, Ukraine will set out to progress to the knockout stage of the Euro for just the second time in their history.
Head-to-Head-Games
It has been quite some time since Romania and Ukraine last faced each other. The last game between them dates back to 2016 and Ukraine won 3:4. Looking at the 3 times these two teams met one another we can see lots of goals being scored from both sides, 2 wins for Ukraine and none for Romania.
Romania – Ukraine Betting Prediction
While I do expect this to be a close ordeal, I will give a slight edge to Ukraine here. Their recent form is better and their players have been tested in decisive playoff games quite recently. Recent head-to-head games also tend to favour Ukraine as well as goals, although, given the nature of both teams, I don’t think many goals are to be expected this time around. Romania has also never won their opening game at a European Championship is a trivia that could also be considered vital. With that being said, my pick here is for Ukraine to win in a close game.
