Borussia Dortmund might have some bad memories associated with Mainz, as they cost them the title last season in the very last game of the campaign. This year, Edin Terzic’s team is firmly occupying the 5th spot and will enjoy Champions League football next season only by the extra slot allocated to Germany. For Mainz, this fixture will be a tough home game in their quest to avoid relegation and preserve their 15-year tenure in Germany’s top flight.
Mainz Team News
Bo Henriksen and his men will have a hard task ahead of them as a win against Borussia Dortmund is mandatory if they are to avoid relegation. Mainz is currently occupying the 16th spot which is the relegation playoff position, but the team will opt to secure enough points and avoid it altogether. And recently Mainz have picked themselves up and are in a good run of form. The team is unbeaten in their last 7 Bundesliga fixtures and is also unbeaten in their last 7 league games. Moreover, Mainz has managed to score in their last 5 matches, but have conceded in 4 of them. Against Dortmund, they will be hard-pressed to secure the 3 points as their last 3 games have ended in 1-1 draws.
Borussia Dortmund Team News
The Black and Yellows have secured their ticket to Wembley after 2 thrilling clashes with PSG that have solidified their stellar Champions League campaign. But when it comes to the Bundesliga we see an entirely different side to Borussia that can only be described with 1 word – inconsistency. Yet, Edin Terzic’s team was on a four-game winning streak away from home before their disastrous game with RB Leipzig that saw Dortmund drop out of the battle for the 4th spot. In their last 2 Bundesliga away games The Black and Yellows have managed to score, but also concede.
Head-to-Head-Games
Mainz have no victory over Borussia in any of the last 5 head-to-head fixtures while Dortmund have claimed 3 victories. Four of those 5 games have seen goals scored by both sides and on 3 occasions there were over 2.5 goals. As guests, Borussia have won their last 5 visits to Mainz.

Eintracht Frankfurt – Borussia Dortmund Betting Prediction
I would expect Mainz to be way more focused on this game than Dortmund. After all, Bo Henriksen and his team are fighting for their survival, while Borussia might experience the so-called continental hangover effect. It will not be surprising if Edin Terzic rotates his squad too to give chances to players that don’t feature as much or to build match fitness for returning starters such as Donyell Malen. For Borussia, the remaining Bundesliga games don’t have much weight and it will not surprise me one bit if Edin Terzic generally does as many rotations and experiments with his team as possible, to minimize the risk of injuries and fatigue before the Wembley final. Thus, my take here is for the game to have more than 2.5 goals and for both teams to score. Mainz will go all out attacking, they have no other option but to win, while Dortmund’s reserves will use these opportunities to prove themselves and earn more minutes. This will probably result in an open and interesting game with a healthy amount of goals.
