Pete Rose, one of Major League Baseball’s greatest players and a controversial figure due to his involvement in sports betting, passed away at his home in Las Vegas on September 30, 2024, at the age of 83. The cause of death has not yet been determined.
The Career of “Charlie Hustle”
Rose earned the nickname “Charlie Hustle” for his intense, all-out playing style, famously sprinting to first base even after walks. Over a remarkable 24-year career, Rose established himself as MLB’s all-time leader in hits with a staggering 4,256. He spent 19 seasons with his hometown team, the Cincinnati Reds, and became a 17-time All-Star, three-time World Series champion, a National League MVP, and a World Series MVP.
Beyond the numbers, Rose’s enthusiasm for baseball was unmatched. He once stated, “Every summer, three things are going to happen: the grass is going to get green, the weather is going to get hot, and Pete Rose is going to get 200 hits and bat .300.” True to his words, he maintained a career batting average of .303.
Rose’s incredible performance made him a shoo-in for the Baseball Hall of Fame. At one point, baseball commissioner Peter Ueberroth promised that a prominent spot in the Hall was waiting for him.
Betting Scandal: The Fall from Grace
Rose’s illustrious career, however, was overshadowed by a scandal that shocked the baseball world. In March 1989, Rose was implicated in a betting scandal, which became one of the most infamous in sports history. Second only to the 1919 “Black Sox” scandal, where several Chicago White Sox players were banned for throwing the World Series.
As the manager of the Cincinnati Reds, Rose was found to have bet on baseball games. Including games involving his own team. Although he consistently denied betting on games at first, an investigation by Ueberroth found extensive evidence linking him to betting on Reds games during the 1985, 1986, and 1987 seasons. The evidence included testimonies, telephone records, and documents, all pointing to his involvement in gambling on professional baseball.
While there was no proof that Rose ever bet against his own team, Major League Baseball’s rules make no distinction between betting on a team to win or lose. Betting on games involving your own team results in an automatic lifetime ban, which Rose received in 1989. This decision effectively ended his eligibility for the Hall of Fame. And arguably delayed the legalization of sports betting in the U.S. by years.
A Love for Baseball That Never Died
The fall from grace was particularly harsh for Rose, who had a deep, unwavering love for the game. He could recall specific details from games that had happened decades earlier. Furthermore, he had an encyclopedic knowledge of player stats and baseball history. But that passion also fueled his downfall. As it was his involvement in baseball betting that led to his permanent ban from the sport he loved so much.
Rose himself admitted that the scandal had cost him dearly. In July 2024, he revealed that the betting controversy likely cost him around $100 million in lost income. “That’s what I’d have made in baseball if I hadn’t got suspended,” Rose said during an event for the HBO documentary series Charlie Hustle & The Matter of Pete Rose.
With little to lose after his ban, Rose continued betting on baseball in Nevada. This was the only state where sports betting was legal until 2018. He stood by his actions, stating in his 2019 autobiography Play Hungry, “I don’t think betting is morally wrong. I don’t even think betting on baseball is morally wrong. There are legal ways, and there are illegal ways, and betting on baseball the way I did was against the rules of baseball.”
A Complicated Legacy
Though Rose’s scandal stained his legacy, he remained a beloved figure for many fans. He regularly appeared at events, signing memorabilia and chatting with fans. It seemed that for him, the admiration from his supporters was a way to heal the emotional toll the scandal had taken. Many fans continued to believe that Rose’s contributions to the game of baseball far outweighed his mistakes.
Even after decades of controversy, Pete Rose’s impact on baseball remains undeniable. His competitive spirit, unparalleled career stats, and lasting love for the game will forever make him a memorable figure in the sport’s history. Even if his path took him far from the Hall of Fame.
